JTS-001: Concepts and Principles for Technology Enabled Legal Practice

Course Description

Driven by innovations in information and communications technology, the nature of work and organizations are evolving rapidly. The theories, concepts, approaches and techniques used in the past to manage work, including in the practice of law, are also changing in the face of the new realities of remote work, process automation, internet-connected devices, and other digital technologies.

The client’s expectation of technology-savvy service is driving the need for change in the way legal business is conducted.

This course will explore the basic concepts of technology in the legal workplace for attorneys and legal professionals who want to leverage technology to improve their productivity, efficiency and the overall quality of the service delivered to their clients.

This course is being conducted by the Apex Technology Academy (apexjustice.org) of the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions in collaboration with the Council of Legal Education Eugene Dupuch Law School, 21st Century Educators , and the Caribbean Internet Development Foundation

Course delivery will be online, both asynchronously and synchronously.

Participants will require:

  • A laptop / tablet, webcam & microphone
  • A reliable Internet connection

Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to imbue current and future attorneys and legal practitioners with a fundamental understanding of the value and importance of technology in the workplace. It also presents practical guidance.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define key technology terms and concepts relevant to lawyers and legal practice.
  • Recognize key trends in office automation to improve investment and decision-making.
  • Discover key best practices for law practice management using information and communications technology.
  • Apply key best practices to improve personal and office productivity.

Course Duration and Pace

Suggested pace: 2-4 hours per week (asynchronous and synchronous activities, including quizzes and discussion)

Duration: 2 weeks (elapsed time)

Assessment

You are required to complete all quizzes by xxxx p.m. EST on xxxx 2023. However, we recommend that you complete each quiz as suggested in the Course Overview.

Participants must meet the minimum requirement to complete all course components and quizzes by the time the course is closed to receive a Certificate of Participation. Discussion Forums:

The discussion forums have been designed to give you the opportunity to engage with other participants on the course about your collective experiences, as well as the opportunities and challenges with implementing legal technology. In order to fulfil all the requirements for the course, for each week of the course you will need to:

  • make one original post on a discussion forum, and
  • respond to a post by another participant on an additional discussion forum.

Attendance:

Attendance at synchronous sessions is not mandatory. However, it is strongly suggested that you attend these 1-hour long sessions as they will provide you with the opportunity to ask questions related to the material, and to clarify course concepts and requirements.
